4 Reasons Why Indonesia is Prone to Earthquakes

As we all know, on October 28th, 2018, some earthquakes occurred in the Donggala District, Palu. The earthquakes caused a series of fast moving waves and long wavelength called tsunami that destroyed the district. Besides the earthquakes in Palu, some earthquakes also occurred in Lombok. The Lombok earthquakes occurred repeatedly which caused a lot of damage and casualties.

Before the Lombok earthquakes, some earthquakes also occurred in Java and Sumatra. Quoted from bnpb.go.id, earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, caused by collisions between the earth’s plates, active faults (result from the action of plate tectonic forces), volcanic activity or rock debris.

What are the real reasons that makes Indonesia prone to Earthquakes? Here are 4 reasons:

1. Geographical Location

Quoting from worldatlas.com, Indonesia is located between two continents and two oceans. Therefore Indonesia is a strategic place for trade and inter-state relations.

However, despite all the advantages in the economic field, there are adverse effects such as earthquakes that often occur. This happens because Indonesia is located between the Australian earth’s plate, the Eurasian earth’s plate, and the Pacific earth’s plate. Besides that, Indonesia is also included in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc around the Pacific Ocean where many volcanoes and earthquakes are formed.

This is the main reason of earthquakes that often occur in Indonesia, both volcanic and tectonic.

2. Earth’s Plate Movement

One of the causes of earthquakes is the movement of earth’s plates. The movement of this plate produces pressure which leads to an earthquake. The earthquake magnitude scale depends on the amount of pressure that occurs due to the movement of this plate.

The theory of ‘tectonic plates’ explains that the earth consists of several rock layers. Most of the area of the crust layer will turn dry and float in layers like snow. This layer then moves slowly so that it splits and collides between one to another.

Because Indonesia is located between three earth’s plate, tectonic earthquakes often occur as well. When one of these three earth’s plates move and collide against another plate, then massive earthquakes may occur.

3. Pacific Ring of Fire

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc around the Pacific Ocean where many volcanoes and earthquakes are formed. This geographical condition makes Indonesia as an area prone to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis.

This area of Pacific Ring of Fire is shaped like a horse shoe and covers an area of 40,000 km. It also often referred to as the Pacific earthquake belt because it is located above the magma lane. Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes with more than 5 million people living nearby.

With that much amount of volcanoes, there are more volcanic activities that have the potential to cause earthquakes. The most active volcanoes in Indonesia are Mount Kelud and Mount Merapi.

The International Association of  Volcanology and Earth Chemical interior have also set Mount Merapi as a volcano within this decade because of it’s high volcanic activity since 1995.

4. A Chain Reaction of Volcanoes

Our beloved Indonesia has a unique phenomenon that occurs, which is the simultaneous eruption of three volcanoes. These erupting mountains include, Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, Raung Mountain in East Java and Mount Gamalama in Ternate.

The possible cause of it is a chain reaction that occurs in the magma chamber. When viewed from above the Pacific Ring of Fire, we can find that almost all regions in Indonesia are right above the magma chamber.

Because it is located in one lane, every activity that occurs in the magma chamber can trigger the simultaneous eruption of the volcano. Obviously, it’s accompanied by a series of volcanic earthquakes. Because of this, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes.

PT. Indonesia DS Indah Karya

In anyhow, earthquakes cause lots of damages and losses, especially on properties such as homes, offices, villas, losses in tourism and also the risk of casualties as most of the buildings that have been built so far, were made from conventional structure and not earthquake resistant.

PT. Indonesia DS Indah Karya, has been conducting a research for 2.5 years by conducting experiments and absorbing some knowledge from neighboring countries which often experience earthquakes, which are Japan and Taiwan.

With the Wall Structure Technology that we have, PT.IDSIK can provide an earthquake resistant building and technology, we will have this patented it in 2019.

We are very proud that local company in Indonesia can give a positive contribution and participate in minimizing Earthquake posible losses and casualties.
